hqtrilogy log nr. 24

With the camera issues out of the way, I decided to clean up some smaller issues again.

* There was a weird stutter when changing levels from hq2_17 to hq2_18, but after recompiling them it was gone. I checked positions of the trigger_changelevel and their respective info_landmarks, but it all looked fine. Probably a coincidence.

* I straightened out the texture alignment on the staircase in hq2_18, which looked like this before:

Not that it matters much because most of HQA texture alignment is pretty much the same mess. :D

* I cleaned up a lot of HQA textures. For example, the "exit" texture had a bunch of gray noise - that's gone now. The "title" texture had a lot of blocky noise as well, should be cleaner now.

I don't have the original scans, but I think the scanner didn't produce sharp images at all. I didn't even have my own scanner, I always drove to blackjack and used his scanner. :D And the files were so huge, he had to burn the files on a CD so I could take them back home with me. I'm not sure where all those CDs are, or if they still work. However, I could try redrawing the textures, but that would change a lot of the "feel" of the whole mod. Especially the evil smiley that's used for all the buttons is kind of blurry. It's never going to be "HD" with Half-Life anyway (unless I want to add all those hires textures and normal maps and all that), but I'll keep that in the back of my mind for later.

* Since I was already fixing textures, it was time to correct another minor English thing. In "patience" there was a texture that read: "NEXT ARRIVE". I just needed an A and an L to change it to "arrival". I couldn't redraw it or I'd change the style, so I looked around and found the original scan of the Sadism Express ad:

I cut the letters A and L out of the word "uncomfortable" and fixed the "next arrival" texture:

* I fixed the camera framing in the top-down view of the maze in hq2_15. I think I've talked about it before, but the view of 4:3 / 5:4 resolutions is different than widescreen resolutions. And back in 2002, my monitor had a maximum resolution of 1280x1024.

After:

I actually had to increase the draw distance for it all to be visible. :D

* I also fixed the camera framing in the credits.

After:

And finally, I chose to fix two bugs:

1) In one of the twenty rooms of death at the end of HQA, you get run over by the Sadism Express. Kowi once told me that you can jump on it and thus remain alive. I fixed that by adding a wall above the player with some spikes. :D

2) Lupusrex reported that the cutscene in which the Somos Shield Reactor™ gets destroyed could be retriggered. That's fixed by changing the target of the button after the button has been pressed.

And that wraps up 2017 :D I wish you all an awesome year 2018!
