-Antaran's Journal
Previous Day Day1414 Next Day
Carana was a bit under shock today, naturally, so I told her to stay at home. I promised her to visit school and tell them where she had been and what had happened. But before that, I went to Scarlat himself. I told him to ask everyone else and investigate if anyone else has had the same problem with the jail as Carana and me. He listened to my story and swore that I'd hear it first if anyone else was imprisoned as well.
I actually wanted to go directly to the king about this, but I figured I should try to get more people together before trying to "infiltrate" the castle.
After Scarlat's I went to school and told teachers and students what had happened. Then it was Tartek's turn to hear my story. He was rather shocked when he heard what Carana and me were going through.
"But I'm afraid today you won't have any excuse, I need your help with the deliveries," he said. So I spent the whole afternoon with my beloved packages and letters. I used that opportunity and asked people if anything had happened to them in the last few weeks that involved getting imprisoned unfoundedly. Noone had experienced anything like that.
When I came home after work I saw my wife sitting at the dining table reading my journal.
"What is this?" she asked, and continued reading.
"That's the book I found when I was thrown into the cell. The man before me must have had it on him, and since it was empty I started writing in it," I explained, took off my coat and got out of my boots.
She looked at me with big fearful eyes.
"This is-"
"- creepy? Oh yes, it is indeed," I said.
"How can you write your personal life into this? You don't even know if it's really ... empty," she said, or rather whispered.
"What do you mean?" I sat down next to her.
"Don't you find it strange that a criminal has an empty book on him? With a pencil right next to it?" She skimmed through the pages, seemed a bit nervous.
"Well, yes. I'm thinking about it all the time," I scratched my chin. "But, I think the answer is simpler than what we believe. I really suppose that he either couldn't write or he didn't want to write anything because he thought that the guards would've thrown it away anyway."
She sighed and closed my journal. I embraced her and asked her if she had read through my entries. She nodded and said that she would have slapped me already if something had offended her. Well, that was a relief, I guess.
I hope to get some information from Scarlat tomorrow. I also have to carry the compensation I got yesterday to the bank again, it was a bit more money than last time. I don't know if they're paying us for our troubles or to keep our mouths shut, probably both. Damn those filthy rich bastards. What if the king's on their side anyway? This will be interesting...
But first I must sleep. Good night.
