Tartek and his wife were in the Insomida Jail. The same thing that happened to me and Carana now has happened to Tartek and his wife at the same time. They went through the same procedures. They heard the same lies about the previous inhabitans of their cell. They got the same compensation after they had been released, if not more.
At night Tartek showed up in the office as I was about to go home. He looked terrible, strained, exhausted, shocked and so full of anger that he was about to explode. He told me about what he and his wife had gone through, always baling his fists after every second sentence, running around in circles, crunching every bone of Officer Weiler in his hands.
After a while he just sighed and sat down on the ground in the office, next to his table. He looked up to me with sharp eyes. "Who did you inform about this?"
"My banker and Scarlat," I answered. "And while delivering packages and letters I asked some people in town about anything unusual they might have noticed."
His eyes opened wide.
"I will ask Bikk to run the office tomorrow. We have a new mission to accomplish," he said, stood up, saluted to me (without even trying to cover the old reflex) and went home.
I walked home as well. Just when I entered the house and took off my coat, I asked myself, why Tartek didn't defend himself. And, why did Carana not defend herself? Those Insomida Guards can't just threaten people to kill them, if they will not undress and walk into prison against their will.
Taking the risk of causing more nightmares by recalling the memories of her time in prison, I asked Carana why she didn't use her knowledge and skills against the guards, supporting the question with the fact that she could have taken out the whole prison within the blink of an eye if it had been her decision.
A bit shocked and aggrieved that I didn't even greet her when I came home, she answered: "I tried."
"You tried?" I asked, raising one eyebrow. "Correct me if I'm wrong, but when you at least try to defend yourself, you're already breaking bones!"
"I broke one arm of a guard, but then..." She came closer to me, took my coat out of my hands and hung it on a hook next to the door. "...they threatened to kill you."
I felt kind of ashamed... I wanted to apologize for the sudden question, and the obvious answer. How could I not think of that? I did apologize, and Carana just shook her head and we hugged each other...
"Welcome home," she said.

I guess, it must have been the same with Tartek then. I suppose he tried to defend his wife, but then they threatened to kill her. How ingenious...
Tartek's "mission" is going to be interesting. I've never seen him so angry before. They really hit the wrong spot in Tartek now.
I hope those so called "Insomida Guards" will get what they deserve.
